Evaluations
Psychological Evaluations
A psychological evaluation is a formal assessment of an individual's psychological functioning typically completed when there is concern about an individual's emotional status, such as depression or anxiety. A psychological evaluation may include tests of cognitive and academic abilities.
Neuropsychological Evaluations
A neuropsychological evaluation is a more extensive assessment of an individual's neuropsychological functioning performed by a licensed psychologist with specific and formal training in neuropsychology and neuropsychological assessment. A neuropsychological evaluation is a formal, comprehensive assessment of an individual's memory, attention, visual-spatial abilities, executive functoning, language, academic achievement, intellectual ability, adaptive functioning, and emotional status. A neuropsychological evaluation determines how a individual is functioning in comparison to expectations for that age level.
A neuropsychological evaluation provides
information about a child or adolescent's pattern of strengths and
weaknesses, yields a diagnosis
(if warranted), and assists with
developing an appropriate treatment plan and educational interventions and accommodations.
A neuropsychological assessment is appropriate to:
- assist in establishing a diagnosis
- help parents and teachers understand a child's cognitive strengths
and weaknesses
- help parents understand what they need to do to help maximize
their child's development
- establish a performance baseline for use in documenting the
functional effects of medical interventions, neurosurgical
procedures, or therapy
A typical
neuropsychological evaluation will involve assessment of the following:
•attention and concentration
•learning and memory
•reasoning and problem solving skills
•language
•visual-spatial ability
•executive functions (planning & organization)
academics (reading, math, writing)
•mood and personality
•behavioral functioning
• motor and sensory skills
* The
specific tests and procedures used are tailored for each
client
depending on their stage of development and presenting
concerns.
